Abstract

The diverse needs of mobility support with different mobility behaviors and the different approaches to mobility are characteristics of future Wireless. Correspondingly, different mechanisms and mobility management actions are needed at the IP layer. From the basics, the component mobility functions can be defined in terms of information database functions, forwarding functions, and identifier for session continuity. Different configurations of these basic functions give rise to different mobility architectures, in terms of which different Internet mobility mechanisms can be expressed. The basic functions and architectures support networks with or without separation of data and control plane and supports virtualization of network functions in future cellular network designs in 5G wireless and beyond. Different IP mobility mechanisms may then be systematically categorized in terms of these basic functions and architecture. They will become the IP layer building blocks for the diverse mobility management mechanisms needed in future networks.
